"Aldaera is a Basque word that translates as “variant and/or change”.

The Euskaltzaindia (The Royal Academy of the Basque Language) and the Basque Center for Terminology and Lexicography UZEI selected this term as "the word of the year" in 2021. This is the first time that both entities have selected a Basque word (Aldaera) as “word of the year” and it has been chosen due to its repeated use during the pandemic.

We've called the compilation this way because we really like the word and the concept it represents, but above all, because we believe there is beauty on using a term that has been heavily associated with the pandemic and give it a completely opposite use. Thus, this year ALDAERA could also be the word of the year for us :)" - Lotura
